Chapter 7. Creating New Pages > Before You Start

Before You Start

Regardless of the path you take to making your new page, in almost all cases, you'll have to take one additional step: linking the page. The aptly named web is a series of interconnected files—like a spider web—and publishing a new page without providing a link places the page metaphorically off the web and makes the page difficult to find. Granted, in some circumstances, a page is intentionally left unlinked; but for most situations, you'll need to be sure that whenever your new page is published, there is at least one link from somewhere on your site leading to it.

To help you do the right thing, Contribute lets you create a link and a corresponding new page in one operation. While editing a page, you can select the text or image that will link to the new page and choose Link > Create New Page from the toolbar. You'll then have all the options discussed in this chapter available to you; choose one, and Contribute will save the current page as a draft—with the new link added—and open your just-created page for editing. As you'll see throughout this chapter, Contribute also lets you create unlinked pages on your site.
