Chapter 4. Browsing with Macromedia Cont... > Creating and Managing Bookmarks

Creating and Managing Bookmarks

Contribute doesn't restrict you to quickly accessing pages on connected websites. Through the bookmarks feature, you can earmark any page to revisit whenever you'd like. Bookmarks work like Favorites in Internet Explorer and can be organized into folders or removed when you no longer want them.

TIP

If you use Internet Explorer, there's no need to re-enter your Favorites into Contribute; your Internet Explorer Favorites are automatically imported whenever Contribute starts. You'll find all your Internet Explorer Favorites by choosing Bookmarks > Other Bookmarks.

Creating New Bookmarks

You'll find all the bookmark controls available from the main menu. To add a new bookmark:

1.
Browse to the page you want to mark.

2.
Choose Bookmarks > Add Bookmark.

The Add Bookmark dialog box appears, with the title of the current page (see Figure 4.7).

4.7. New bookmarks can be placed in the default folder, called Contribute Bookmarks, or you can create a new folder.

3.
To change the name of the bookmark, enter a different title in the Name field.

4.
To place the bookmark in an existing folder, select that folder.

If you don't select a folder, the bookmark is placed in the Contribute Bookmarks folder and appears in the main listing under the Bookmarks menu.

5.
To create a new folder, perform the following steps:

1. Choose the New Folder button.

2. Name the folder in the New Folder dialog box.

3. Select the just-created folder.

NOTE

Contribute won't let you name a bookmark using any of these characters: /, \, :, *, ? “, <, >, and |.

6.
Select OK when you're ready to place the bookmark in the selected folder.

Test Drive 4.3 Bookmark the Employee of the Month Page

Let's make sure we always can find out who the employee of the month is by bookmarking that page:

1.
Navigate to the employee_of_month.htm file (as previously described in Test Drive 4.2).

2.
Select Bookmarks > Add Bookmark.

3.
Choose New Folder and name the new folder Bounty General. Click OK to close the New Folder dialog box.

4.
Select the new folder.

5.
Change the bookmark title in the Name field to Employee of the Month.

6.
Click OK to create the new bookmark.

Deleting Bookmarks

As you continue to use Contribute, you'll no doubt move from one project to another. To help you manage your bookmarks, Contribute allows you to delete outdated or unwanted ones. Here's how you remove a bookmark:

1.
Choose Bookmarks > Delete Bookmark.

2.
From the Delete Bookmark dialog box (see Figure 4.8), select the unwanted bookmark and choose Delete.

4.8. Clear out unneeded bookmarks with the Delete Bookmark command.

Where We've Been…

Now that you've had a chance to use Contribute's built-in browser, I'm sure you see how easy it is to navigate to the pages you need to modify. Here are some key points to remember:

  • Before you can edit a page in Contribute, you must browse to it.

  • Jump immediately to the home page of any of your connected sites by choosing Home Pages from the toolbar.

  • You can reach pages within the site by selecting Choose from the toolbar and then locating the desired file in the file Explorer-like dialog box.

  • Both drafts and recently published pages are available from the View menu. You can also open a draft by selecting its link from the Pages area of the Sidebar.

  • Contribute lets you keep a list of your favorite sites under the Bookmarks menu. You can add new pages and folders for any site, whether you are connected to the site or not.
