Chapter 9. Adjusting Page Properties > Including Keywords and Descriptions

Including Keywords and Descriptions

Shortly after the web began, it became obvious that some sort of cataloging system was needed; otherwise, people wouldn't be able to find the information they wanted, even though it was accessible online. And so the search engine was born. Search engines remain a prime element in the web today, as evidenced by the continued success of the Internet's first successful online business, Yahoo. To make it possible for search engines to quickly grasp the focus of a page, a special category of the HTML language called Meta tags was created. Meta tags, unlike most other HTML tags, are used to describe the page as a whole rather than its sections. Although the search engines can read the meta tags, the regular visitor to your page will never see them.

Contribute gives you control over two of the most important meta tags: keywords and descriptions.
