Part I: Lowering Production Costs

If your job were to build a new light bulb, would you create a new screw thread, or would you use the existing standard gauge? It is a silly question, really; one that would not even need to be asked of those of us living in a post–industrial-revolution world. We take standards for granted, and using the standard-gauge screw threads would be a matter of course.

But when it comes to making web pages, the value of working with standards is frequently overlooked. We web designers often waste time and money ignoring the economy offered by standards that exist in our own industry. We spend a shocking amount of time building bulbs for particular lamps, when we could devote those same (or fewer) resources to building bulbs that work on a wide variety of lamps.
