Chapter 6. Content Management on a Tight... > Do You Need Authoring and Editing Fe...

Do You Need Authoring and Editing Features?

A wonderful feature found in some CMS systems is an easy-to-use interface for authoring and editing content. Some CMS interfaces look much like word-processing software; others, such as Zope (see Figure 6.5), require HTML authoring experience. You might need an interface that is easy for nontechnical content authors to use. Do not rule out this kind of feature just because you are on a shoestring budget. You might find an affordable tool that meets this requirement. Take the time to list the features that you will need:

  • Spell-checking utility

  • WYSIWYG interface that allows nontechnical people to enter content without having to use or understand HTML (see Figures 6.4 and 6.5)

  • Undo and redo capabilities

  • Copy and paste support

  • Capability to manually or automatically create metadata (see sidebar)

  • Page formatting capability within your template

  • Image placement control

  • Required content areas (such as alternate text for images)
