Chapter Checklist

  1. Buyer, beware.

Although there are many well-run domain name registries and hosting companies, others probably belong to SPECTRE. Protect your pocketbook from the sharks by staying organized and doing your research.

  2. Watch out for hidden costs.

Hidden costs such as site downtime and difficult-to-reach support lines can eat up a site's budget quickly.

  3. Beware of bandwidth blues.

Many hosts will slap you with bandwidth charges if your site traffic increases. Make sure that you know what your bandwidth limits are and how much you will pay if you go over that limit. Keep an eye on your site's statistics; if your traffic is increasing, that is a good thing, but you should not pay a winner's penalty fee. It is your responsibility to know what your transfer rates are and to know how much bandwidth costs. You will save money if you stay on top of the information.

  4. Do it yourself.

Remember that you can host your own site. If you like to roll up your sleeves and get under the hood, the do-it-yourself option could provide the best bang for your buck.

Groucho: It's all right—that's in every contract. That's what they call a “sanity clause.”

Chico: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! You can't fool me—there ain't no Sanity Claus.

—Groucho and Chico Marx in A Night at the Opera (1935)
