Chapter 5. Extreme XHTML > The Syntactical Rules of XML

The Syntactical Rules of XML

XML imposes stricter rules on XHTML documents than HTML does. The main differences between XHTML and HTML documents are as follows:

  • XML documents must be well-formed.

  • Attributes must be fully qualified and quoted.

  • Lowercase markup.

  • Scripts and style elements must conform to the stricter #PCDATA format.

  • Fragment identifiers must be of type id, not name.
