Thanks to my fellow team members, Eric Ott and Ray Bourdin, for bringing this dream a long, arduous way to reality. It’s been a high-energy project right from the very beginning. I’m grateful that I had two partners who, simultaneously, stoked the engine and hung on for dear life, all the way to the end.

I owe a special thank you to Tim Green, who took on the Herculean task of translating our existing recipes for PHP.

We’ve been unbelievably blessed to have a full slate of technical editors—Massimo Foti, Sean Nicholson, Gareth Downes-Powell, Matt Brown, and Nancy Gill—who have gone beyond the call of duty time and again to help shape this project. Thanks to Monique for helping to manage such an unwieldy beast and to Julie Ott for giving it such a pretty face.

I really appreciate all the hard work put in by everyone at New Riders: David, Chris, Linda, Jennifer, Lisa, Alan, Lori, Gloria, and all the others. Thanks again to my agent, Laura Belt, for watching out for me.

One last special thanks to Debra and Margot, who had the good grace to give me a little breathing room during the day and fill my nights with tales of fencing, digital video, and the mysteries and joys of repatterning.

—Joseph Lowery

Joseph Lowery, the team’s expert author, spearheaded the effort. He transformed our computer files and code snippets into a book you can hold in your hands. Ray Borduin, VP of Technology at WebAssist, spent countless hours developing the recipe source code for the book. Julie Ott, my sister, volunteered her creative talent to produce the Web designs included with this book. And our team of tech editors provided great support and critical feedback.

I really appreciate the vision and support of New Riders for bringing this product to market. David Dwyer, Chris Nelson, and Linda Bump helped provide the operational direction needed to produce this book. The community of developers appreciates the platform provided by New Riders to share our knowledge and war stories.

Some of the recipes and techniques in this book are based on work and direction outside the core team. Thanks as well to the following individuals: Hieu Bui, Kurt O’Donnell, Tim Sweeney, Dave Hoffman, Matt Eastling, Tom Gade, Neal Hansch, Sho Kuwamoto, Amit Kishnani, George Comninos, Dave DeVisser, Eric Wittman, Rob Christenson, Joe Marini, Eric Lerner, Matt Lerner, Mike Sundermeyer, Ken Sundermeyer, NJ, Heidi Bauer, and Daniel Taborga.

—Eric Ott
