Chapter 12. Scoring an Assessment and Hi... > Understanding Assessments

Understanding Assessments

Assessments evaluate how well a learner understands the material you’ve presented in your eLearning application. Different types of assessments can be delivered via an eLearning application:

  • Pretest— This type of assessment evaluates the initial knowledge that the learner has about the topic. This data can then be used to present only those subtopics that the learner doesn’t already understand.

  • Self-evaluation exercises— This type of assessment presents feedback to help the learner benefit from both correct and incorrect responses they make to questions. These assessments can also serve as practice for a later graded quiz.

  • Graded quiz— This type of assessment tracks the learner’s answers and usually gives a single try per question.

  • Certification exam— This type of assessment requires proctoring and is usually at odds with the “on my time” and “anywhere” benefits of eLearning. Most certification exams are offered separately from eLearning applications.
