Chapter 16. Safely Collaborating and Sha... > Using WebDAV and Visual SourceSafe

Using WebDAV and Visual SourceSafe

Dreamweaver’s built-in check in/out system is adequate for some online learning application projects. However, large, enterprisewide teams might want to use more robust overwrite protection and version control systems. Of course, small teams can also decide to invest in the software and hardware necessary to use these systems.

Dreamweaver enables connection to the remote site via the WebDAV protocol, an extension of HTTP. Many believe that WebDAV might eventually replace FTP because of the security risks FTP poses to servers. WebDAV offers overwrite protection, controlled by the server, and the protocol will eventually provide version control, too.
