Chapter 3. Establishing the Course Speci... > Creating a Specifications Document

Creating a Specifications Document

There are many decisions to make on the course specifications. When “spec-ing out” the online learning application, you create a document that will evolve as your project evolves. This document might grow to include a style guide, a content naming guide, and a map of how the course is organized.

You will collect information about the audience for the online learning application, the technical environment where the learning application will be housed, and the types of content that the instructional designers have included in the course design. You’ll use this information to guide the development of the online learning application. For example, if the course design specifies that audio narration will be included on each page, the template you develop will need to include a way of launching and controlling audio files. Or, you might be lucky enough to have a single browser type that is predominate among learners so you can develop with only a single browser in mind.
