Chapter 9. Adding Rich Media Content > Checking for Players

Checking for Players

Dreamweaver enables you to check for a player in the user’s browser before the Web page is even loaded. This makes it easy to guide the user to the correct download. Although you can provide a URL that takes users directly to the download page for the appropriate plug-in automatically, this can be confusing for the user. It’s best to detect this yourself and add user-friendly instructions for the download.

The Check Plugin behavior enables your Web page to detect whether a certain plug-in is present, and then redirects the user to a download page. You can detect plug-ins at the beginning of an online learning application, or you can do the detection at a certain page of content. It’s helpful for users to create a page to detect all the necessary players right at the beginning of the learning application. However, if you have bookmarks allowing users to jump to their last spots in the course, and they log into the course on a different computer, they could bypass the detection routine.
