designing for HTML

The first fundamental challenge of web design is to create pages that look and behave the way they’re supposed to using HTML, the page-layout language that controls the appearance of everything on the web. (See building your first web page, p. 196.)

From a design perspective, the problem with HTML is that it isn’t a design tool. It was developed to define the structure of documents (distinguishing headlines from paragraphs from lists), not their appearance. Many visual effects used in print design simply aren’t possible with HTML.
