Chapter 12. adding applications to your ... > developing software for your site

developing software for your site

When you can’t find a commercial application that suits your needs—or when you want to build a tool that will differentiate you from your competitors—you’ll find yourself developing software for your site. Whether it’s a tool for your users (like a search engine) or the site creators (like a content-management system), the development process is the same. And it’s a challenge.

You’ll need a product manager, an engineer, and a designer to come together and design the application. And even when team members are skilled, motivated, and focused on the same goal, they face enormous hurdles: They don’t think the same way, they don’t work the same way, and they don’t even speak the same language. And that, as they say in Engineerese, is “non-trivial.”
