Putting Conceptual Models to Work: What’s in a Store?

One of the best methods for understanding the importance and use of conceptual models is to analyze different models as they’ve been applied to various situations. Fortunately, one of the most instructive models for this purpose is also one the most widely used: the online store.

Although online stores are one of the most popular types of Web applications, the efforts spent on their design and development have largely failed to produce a shopping experience as compelling as a physical store or catalog. In large part, this failing results from the conceptual model of any stores being inappropriate to the type of products they sell. Online clothing stores such as Banana Republic’s are one example.
