Layers: The Basics

On one level, Dreamweaver layers are an attempt to give web designers the kind of control over the positioning of elements on a page as is available in print media. To some extent, layers do provide that kind of functionality. To those new to web design, layers often appear to be the web’s answer to the concept of text boxes in programs such as Microsoft Publisher. A text box is a rectangular container that can be placed anywhere on the page to position elements exactly as desired. For reasons we’ll discuss later, however, it’s best not to use layers in this way.

But layers do have a lot of great uses. For example, layers are the best choice for achieving effects such as:
