Chapter 21. Development Issues: Planning... > What Are They Going to See?

What Are They Going to See?

After determining the purpose of your site and the target audience, you should begin to develop possible structuring schemes for the site. At the top of the list should be considerations such as the overall design and layout, as well as the navigation you will provide that enables users to easily go from one area to the next. The following sections discuss these topics in detail.

Design and Layout

During the design and layout phase, your creative juices have to flow. You can save a lot of time in the long run by creating a very basic idea or sketch of how you want the site to look and feel. Likewise, a detailed plan now will save you a lot of time and grief later. Such a plan enables you to logically decide on content placement or where the navigation items will best be utilized. During this time, you also can view the site in your mind as a single object, not a collection of various pages. If you create the look and feel before you start adding content, you will most likely maintain consistency throughout your site. If visitors are easily confused by how your site looks, chances are good that they won’t hang around long enough to see whether it has valuable content.
