Tables and Page Layout: If You Can’t Beat ’Em, Join ’Em

If browsers all implemented tables properly, knowing how to use the tags and attributes discussed so far would be enough. You would just place the tables as you pleased on your pages, setting width and height, colspan and rowspan, and feel assured that your designs would display correctly in the currently used browsers.

However, there’s no reason for despair. You’re going to learn a different approach to building pages with tables, one based on the way tables actually work. Tables do behave in predictable ways (a fact often not learned until after much trial and error). If these tendencies are understood, and the designer is willing to accommodate himself to them, smoothly working table pages are quite possible.
