Chapter 6. The Design of Everyday Pages > Users See What They Expect

Users See What They Expect

It’s always interesting to observe users using your site for the first time. Although this experience might cause you to pull out handfuls of hair, it really can help you understand how users “see” your site. The most painful part of such usability tests is observing users who are sooooooo close to clicking on the correct link yet choose to ignore it, even if their mouse pointer is right next to it.

When the test moderator finally intervenes and guides a user to the correct link, the user tends to respond with something like, “Oh, I didn’t expect to see that there,” or “I didn’t think that it would be behind that link.” What has happened is that these users didn’t find what they were expecting. If you don’t design your pages according to what people expect to see, they simply won’t see it.
