Chapter 2. Browsers > Provide Multiple Paths

Provide Multiple Paths

Overview

Enable your users to access information or products through multiple paths. Don’t force them to think according to how you want to structure your web site.

No matter how you design your site, different users will want to navigate your site in different ways with the intent of reaching the same destination. A left-brained person might find that funky lamp in Lighting > Desk Lamps, whereas a right-brained person might look in Urban Style > Lighting. Having a site structure in which each product or service is only accessible through one path can lead to many users not being able to find what they’re looking for. The success criteria for browsers is that they must be able to find what they want regardless of how they get there. Your site needs to be flexible in allowing users to find their own way through the site; otherwise, you might risk losing them.
