Case Study: FAQs at AltaVista

AltaVista, now billing itself as The Search Company, puts its marketing pitch inside the Help pages. For instance, in Help, when I choose the first topic, I am told that searching today is “far easier than ever before.” How come? You “don't need to learn any commands.” OK! I'm for that. “Just enter words related to what you want and chances are good that useful results will go to the top of the list of matches.” I like the phrasing: the odds favor your getting decent hits.
