Chapter 2. Setting Up Your UltraDev Work... > Configuring Your Machine to Serve Dy...

Configuring Your Machine to Serve Dynamic Web Pages

Configuring your local workstation to act as a test server for your dynamic pages can be advantageous in several aspects. For instance, a test server allows you to develop and change your Web site without any effect on your production server. The fact that database-driven pages rely on additional factors such as database integrity and proper database connections makes it even more logical to test your pages thoroughly on a test server before migrating your pages to your Web server. In addition, by using your workstation as your test server, you don’t have the cost and maintenance associated with a second server. Finally, for those Web developers whose sites are hosted remotely, it can save you the time of having to transfer your files to your server every time you want to test them.

Tip

Avoid Editing “Live” Pages It is always a good idea to have a test server on which you can edit your Web pages and work out any kinks before making them “live.” Editing pages directly from your production server is unwise because it places your data at risk of corruption. If you already have a test server in place and configured to serve dynamic pages, you may want to skip the following exercises.
