Chapter 2. Setting Up Your UltraDev Work... > Choosing Your Web Server Extension E...

Choosing Your Web Server Extension Environment

Another decision that needs to be made prior to building your dynamic Web site is the extension environment that your Web site will operate in. In other words, will you use ASP, JSP, or CFML to build your dynamic pages? Once again, if you are in a corporate environment, this decision may have already been made for you. Even if it has, however, it’s a good idea to understand how each of the technologies work and the pros and cons of each platform. To help you understand the various extension environments that are available, the next few sections focus on the benefits and drawbacks of the extension environments. Even if your organization has already chosen an extension environment for your site, you might want to take a look at the other available options so you know what other technologies are available for future projects.

Note

A Focus on ASP Because ASP is currently the most popular of the three extension environments, the exercises in this book are focused mainly on developing for ASP. We will, however, point out differences that may occur in the ColdFusion and JSP environments when they arise.
