Part I: Preparing to Go "Dynamic" > Setting Up Your UltraDev Workstation as a T...

Chapter 2. Setting Up Your UltraDev Workstation as a Test Server

By now you are probably chomping at the bit to get to the development sections of the book and check out the hands-on exercises. However, taking full advantage of UltraDev’s capabilities requires either a server or a workstation capable of serving Web pages, communicating with a database, and building and serving dynamic Web pages. UltraDev was designed to develop Web pages for a variety of server platforms; you must choose a Web server application (such as Personal Web Server or Apache Web Server), an extension environment (Active Server Pages, Java Server Pages, or ColdFusion), and possibly even a scripting language (such as JavaScript or VBScript).

Once you choose a Web server application and an extension environment, and have your UltraDev workstation or server properly configured, UltraDev can write the necessary code to suit your server environment and insert it into your HTML pages. Imagine being able to build dynamic Web pages without ever having to write a line of code.

This chapter helps you accomplish the following:

  • Understand the Web server processes

  • Choose your Web server application

  • Choose a Web server extension environment

  • Configure your workstation to serve dynamic Web pages

  • Configure UltraDev 4 for your selected server extension environment
