Chapter 3. Developing Databases for the Web > Communicating with Your Database

Communicating with Your Database

The final element of adding a database to your Web pages that you should understand is the language used to manipulate the data stored in your database. When you set up your ODBC data source, you gave your machine the ability to use a set of command strings to communicate with your database. The set of these strings is called the Structured Query Language (SQL).

Note

Pronouncing SQL The debate rages on as to the correct pronunciation of SQL. Hardcore programmers like to pronounce it by saying the letters ES-Que-EL, while the rest of the world refers to it as Sequel. No matter how you choose to pronounce it, be prepared to be corrected by those who pronounce it differently.
