Chapter 9. Building Search Capabilities > Adding Advanced Search Capabilities

Adding Advanced Search Capabilities

Simple searches don’t really provide the functionality needed to search a product catalog or an employee directory. In these instances, the visitor may want to filter all the information in a database table by criteria such as product name, type, or cost. She might want to further refine her search by availability or even location of the product. Or if her search doesn’t provide the results she was seeking, she might want to broaden the search by reducing the number of restrictions she has entered. For this type of search, visitors need something that provides a great deal of flexibility.

The most flexible search option that you can provide to your visitors is the advanced search. Adding an advanced search to your site offers visitors the opportunity to shape their results by providing a wide variety of search options and allowing visitors to choose which criteria they wish to search by. This allows visitors to make their searches as broad or as narrow as necessary.
