Part II: Building a Solid Foundation > The Dreamweaver in Dreamweaver UltraDev ...

Chapter 5. The Dreamweaver in Dreamweaver UltraDev 4

Have you ever had a friend or family member who spent every spare minute of his time rebuilding the engine of his muscle car, yet seemed to overlook the fact that the only thing holding the chassis together was rust and dirt? I have a couple of friends like this, and I am always giving them grief about the fact that they focus all their efforts (and a considerable amount of money) on the car’s power plant, yet they remain blind to the fact that the structure of their car is just short of a death-trap.

The reason I bring this up is because building a dynamic Web site is a lot like building a car from scratch. Although a robust database and powerful scripting languages are as important as the power plant and transmission for your site, a well-designed page layout and attractive graphics are just as important because they serve as the chassis. After all, before your visitors ever give your database a run for its money, they will have already evaluated your site based on the visual appeal and functionality that you have designed using HTML elements. First impressions count!

Behind UltraDev’s database-connectivity, eCommerce, and eLearning features is Dreamweaver 4, one of the most powerful HTML authoring applications available. Using the authoring tools, you can ensure that the static infrastructure of your Web pages is just as sound as the database that drives them.

This chapter focuses on using the HTML design tools found in UltraDev 4 to build the foundation for your dynamic Web site. Each exercise introduces you to tools used to create an individual element of a Web page.

These topics include the following:

  • Choosing your page properties

  • Designing your page layout

  • Building and manipulating tables

  • Adding and linking graphics

  • Constructing template files
