Chapter 18. Adding Video and Audio

IN THIS CHAPTER

It's funny that we live in a world where cinemas and video rental stores are within miles of our homes. We log onto online video rental stores and even subscribe to video-on-demand services for our televisions. Yet with all of this at our fingertips, we're always amazed when we see a small, jerky, and grainy video on the web. Why is that? Because of the promise of high-quality digital video, available to us when we want it and whenever we want it. In the past few years, companies such as Microsoft, Apple, Real, Discreet, Macromedia, and Sorenson have made strides in delivering on that promise. With streaming technologies, better codecs (compression algorithms), and generally higher bandwidth in our homes, the promise of delivering small-sized, high-quality web video is slowly coming to fruition.
