Choosing a Database

What would a Web application be without a database? Not much of one at all unless you planned on working strictly with text files and XML files. Most Web applications today, especially those whose main goal is to make money online, employ some sort of database within their organization. As we progress through the chapters, you get a deeper understanding of working with databases, but for now, we need to start thinking about the database that will power our Web applications. In previous chapters, we looked at some examples of databases. This should have gotten you thinking about the operating system and server-side development model you plan to use. Before you make the final decision as to the database you want to use, let's take a look at the databases in more detail, including steps to take when you're ready for the actual installation. The three that we'll discuss are

  • Access

  • MySQL

  • SQL Server
