Chapter 18. Dreamweaver MX 2004 for Appl... > Create a Connection with a Data Sour...

Create a Connection with a Data Source Name (DSN)

To send or retrieve data from a data source, you must open a connection with that data source through Dreamweaver. The first type of connection you'll be connecting to is a DSN. Data sources come in different formats, such as graphics files. A database created by Access is a different type of file from a database created by Oracle or FileMaker Pro. To offer a variety of applications to access different data sources, the Open Database Connectivity standard was developed. Open Database Connectivity, commonly referred to as ODBC, is a driver that translates database calls into language-specific API calls. With that said, with the specific drivers installed for the particular database (in our case ODBC), the application has the capability to read and write information to and from the database.

Windows systems already have the appropriate drivers installed for Access, SQL Server, dBASE, Oracle, FoxPro, Excel, and Paradox. If you're developing with a Macintosh, you will usually connect to the ODBC driver that resides on the testing server.
