Chapter 21. ColdFusion > Introduction to ColdFusion

Introduction to ColdFusion

ColdFusion is software developed by Macromedia that is loaded on to a Web server; it is classed as an application server. This middleware application server enables you to build rapidly developed, highly scalable, Web-based applications in fewer lines of code traditionally than other languages such as ASP, PHP, or even JSP.

You can purchase the ColdFusion software from Macromedia or its partners (or subscribe to a hosted account with a ColdFusion Web-hosting partner), and it comes in two commercial options: Standard and Enterprise Editions. If you're an interested developer, a free Developer Edition is available to download and install on most computers (even laptops) from the Macromedia.com website. This developer version is limited to the local IP (localhost) of the machine it resides on, but is otherwise excellent for learning how to write ColdFusion. ColdFusion even includes a local JRun Web server to install and use to serve your ColdFusion pages if you do not already have Web server software installed. This included Web server serves pages from port 8500 by default. Demonstrations in this chapter use the included Web server.
