Day 13. Restricting User Access > The Dreamweaver MX Authentication System

The Dreamweaver MX Authentication System

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce you to the process of user authentication and maintaining a user's state across different Web pages. Dreamweaver MX's built-in user authentication behaviors help automate this process, but it is important that you understand how the underlying process works so that you are aware of the shortcomings and benefits. You'll use the techniques discussed here, and the Dreamweaver MX authentication system in depth.

Dreamweaver MX will perform the same actions you've learned here, including setting a session variable—all without editing the code once. One of the problems with the behavior, though, is that it forces you to use the username as the primary key for the user table. Although this is fine for most cases, it eliminates the possibility of allowing the users (or an administrator) to modify their usernames.
