Day 2. Creating Your First Web Site > Design Considerations

Design Considerations

I know what you're thinking; you're ready to start using the Dreamweaver MX tools and design your Web site…so why aren't we jumping right in? Before you get started, there are a few points of Web design that I'd like to stress—most notably that every attractive and successful Web site starts with research and planning.

Know Your Customer

Creating a site can be a tremendous amount of fun, but it also requires some forethought. You should determine whom your site is for before you start building it. If, for example, you're trying to sell yourself as a Web designer, you shouldn't put up a plain gray screen with a text copy of your resume (or one exported from Microsoft Word…yick!). At the opposite end of the spectrum, there is no reason to include heavy graphic elements on a page that is designed to quickly provide mainly text-based information to its visitors. The best site is balanced and uses some graphical elements to supplement the textual information, not just for looks.
