Planning for Code Reuse

If you've worked on large Web sites, you've probably found yourself cutting and pasting code between the different pages to create a consistent look and feel across your Web pages. There are many ways to try to keep your site as efficient as possible, including server-side includes and frames. In some cases they are completely legitimate techniques, but if your server doesn't support server-side includes, or you don't want to use frames, what do you do?

What Is a Server-Side Include?

Server-side includes are a means of including the contents of one file in another. They are used to include a standard header and footer in multiple Web pages. Server-side includes, however, are dependent on the Web server software—not on an application server.
