Additional Functionality on Dynamic Screens

You're probably thinking “This is nice, but I really want to do more…” Never fear, there's much more that you can do, but not all in one day. Using what you've learned so far today, you can actually create a system that lets you sort or filter the records in a recordset based on the information in one of the columns. The method for doing this that you're about to learn is not the most efficient way, but it is straightforward and should give you something to work with until the advanced techniques are discussed later in the week.

Sorting

Sorting records is simple. When you are defining a recordset, take notice of the Sort parameter at the bottom of the recordset definition window. Figure 10.20 shows the rsSimpleDoglist recordset definition you used earlier in the simpletable.asp file. This version of the recordset, however, allows you to sort on the AKCname field. The pop-up menu to the right of the sorting field allows you to choose whether the sorted records will be listed in ascending (A-Z) or descending (Z-A) order. If you change simplelist.asp or simpletable.asp to sort based on AKCname, you'll see the records appear in a different order.
