Week: 2 At a Glance > Restricting User Access

Day 13. Restricting User Access

Something has been missing from everything that we've looked at up until this point. You've learned how to create interactive sites and various other database-driven screens, but there's one area that hasn't even been touched—user logins. How many times have you been to a Web site and been asked to create a user profile or been required to log in before you can use any of the features? The ability to know who the users are when they are interacting with a Web site is paramount in providing true personalized interactive services.

Dreamweaver MX offers its own authentication system, but in order to better understand how and why it works, today's lesson will focus on building a similar system by hand. Today you'll learn:

  • What login systems are good for, and why you need them.

  • How to set up basic login functionality based on an existing user database.

  • Security concerns that you should worry about on production Web sites.
