Finding a Web Hosting Provider

Whether or not you own a domain name, you still need to find a place to host your Web site. Because your site needs to be responsive and available to the entire world 24 hours a day, seven days per week, you'll need to find a reliable hosting provider for your Web site. Unless you have very high-end or specialized needs, you'll probably lease space on a shared Web server for the modest cost of $20–$50 per month. This setup is usually called virtual hosting, and is much cheaper than the high costs and maintenance of owning your own Web server. There are several important factors to consider when choosing a hosting provider. We've listed several important factors with our recommended minimums in parentheses:

  • Amount of storage space (10 MB)

  • Traffic limits (1 GB/month)

  • Technical support options (e-mail and phone)

  • Number of e-mail addresses (whatever you need)

  • Speed of connection (redundant high-speed lines)

  • Speed of Web servers (ask for samples and test yourself)

  • Reliability of Web servers (95% uptime)

  • Availability of traffic statistics (ask for a sample)

  • Web-server platform (depends on your needs and preferences)
