Acquiring a Domain Name

Although it's not required that you own your own domain name to have a Web site, it certainly exudes professionalism. Domain names such as http://www.exotype.com or http://www.amenco.com are much easier to remember than a long and cryptic URL such as http://members.somedomain.com/users/~adamp198. Having your own domain name also shows visitors you're serious about the Web and not a fly-by-night outfit.

If you'd like to register your own domain name, visit http://www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html to find an accredited registrar. Network Solutions (http://www.netsol.com/) is a very popular registrar that you might consider. Find a registrar that you would like to use and see whether the name you are interested in is still available. If you find a domain name you like and a hosting company you want to work with, ask your hosting company whether it will complete the domain registration process for you. If you are familiar with some of the technical aspects of Web hosting, such as DNS and IP addresses, feel free to register the domain name yourself.
