Exercises

Now that you have some understanding of the process of making your site known to search engines and directories, try some exercises on your own.

1:Go to a search engine and enter keywords for a common item, such as shoes, pets, and so on. Check out the source code of the first few selected pages that appear. View Source can be selected from the View menu in both Netscape and Internet Explorer. Look for the Meta tags used in the Head section, or the copy in the page to gain insight as to why a page might be selected over some others.
2:When building your Web site, try to incorporate important topics and keywords throughout the site. In other words, use words that you think people might enter into a search engine, right in the flow of the body copy. Submit your pages to search engines. After about three weeks, check whether your hard work has had any effect by searching for your site.
