Q&A

Q1: I keep trying to put an object onto my grid in a certain place using drag and drop. But when I let go of the object, instead of going in the spot where I want it, it lands in a different place altogether! Why?
A1: One of two things could be happening. Perhaps the space on the grid into which you are trying to place the object is insufficient to accommodate the size of the object. In that case, you must either move other objects to allow enough space for the new one, or increase the size of the grid. The other thing that might keep you from being able to place your object exactly where you want it is that you might have the Snap feature selected for your grid. If so, GoLive allows you to place the object on the grid only according to the gridlines. If you want to put an object between lines, turn off the Snap feature in the Inspector.
Q2:I'm working on a staff page that has staff members' photos lined up on the left of the page, and a short bio across from the photo on the right. But when I look at the page on my friend's PC, the spacing is all out of whack, and the images and text don't line up properly. It looks great on my Mac. What have I done wrong?
A2: What you are experiencing is the result of the way text is rendered on the two different operating systems. Text appears larger on PCs than on Macs. What happened in your case is that the text expanded but the images stayed put. Because users can control the default text size in their browsers, the way your page looks can vary greatly from machine to machine. You would be better off using a table when you need a flexible layout because tables can expand and contract to accommodate the contents they hold, or use Cascading Style Sheets to better control the text (as discussed in Hour 18).
Q3:I'm trying to align objects on my grid. I have three photos that I want to have line up at their top edges. When I go to the Multiselection Inspector, the button I want is grayed out! How do I get it to work?
A3: The reason the button is unavailable to you is because the objects you want to align are too close together. In order for them to line up at their top edges, they would have to overlap at the sides. You cannot have objects overlap on a grid; therefore, the option you are trying to use is grayed out. It is possible that the button is grayed out because the objects are already aligned as well.
