What Is DHTML?

DHTML stands for Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language. With DHTML you can create simple or complex animations, allow users to move items on a Web page, hide and show layers, and more. It can be effectively used to create elegant navigation devices, and when applied properly, it can be fun! It's worthwhile to note, however, that DHTML will only work in version 4+ browsers. If you think this might cause problems for your viewers add the Browser Switch action to your page, as discussed in Hour 19, “Controlling How GoLive Writes HTML.”

Using DHTML in GoLive 6 is a matter of utilizing floating boxes and the Timeline Editor. With these tools you will learn how to build some visual excitement into your Web pages. If you are not yet acquainted with floating boxes, we suggest you read Hour 8, “Designing Pages with Floating Boxes.” Before you proceed any further in this hour, collect images to use in the lessons, or download samples from golivein24.com. Also, we suggest that you create a new site for this hour, and name it animation. If you need help creating a new blank site see Hour 2, “Creating a Site File.”
