Hour 13. Using JavaScript Actions

Not so long ago, if you wanted to have special effects on a Web page, you had to learn JavaScript, or at least how to copy and paste it into your page! Now thanks to GoLive many of the popular JavaScript actions are built right into the application. They are called Actions and are essentially turnkey scripts ready for you to use.

Actions are very easy to implement when you understand the logic and sequence of steps that need to be followed. In this hour we will introduce you to some common Actions, and show you how to customize them for your own use.

GoLive stores these JavaScripts and other ready-made HTML snippets in two locations. Several of the most commonly used are held in the Smart section of the Objects palette, and the rest reside in a folder called Actions, which is inside your GoLive application folder. Some of the neat things you can do with objects and Actions are image rollovers—in which a button changes its appearance when your mouse passes over it—pop-up menus, and links that open a new browser window of a specified size.

In this hour, you'll learn

  • How to use the Modified Date object

  • How to configure a Rollover object

  • How to configure a pop-up navigation element

  • How to make a link open a new window of a specified size

  • How to configure a remote rollover

  • Where to find and install Actions
