Exploring Layer Tags

Set the default tag for layers in the layer preferences. You can also change the tag in the Property inspector by selecting another tag from the Tag drop-down menu. Different tags allow different functionality in different browsers. The <div> tag is the most common tag to use in cross-browser development. <span> and <div> tags create what are called Cascading Style Sheet, or CSS, layers. These tags implement the W3C standards for layers.

Even though both the <div> and the <span> tag will work to define a layer, the <div> tag is the more logical choice and is more in keeping with what the W3C standard intended. The <div> tag is used to logically divide a Web page into sections. The <span> tag is usually used to apply a style to a span of text within a paragraph. You'll want to stick with <div> tags for your layer development.
