Hour 9. Adding Multimedia Files > Understanding Players

Understanding Players

All multimedia files require a third-party program to play in a browser. These players are either plug-ins or ActiveX controls, and some are installed automatically with the browser or operating system software. Of course, you don't want to assume that a person viewing your Web page has the same players installed that you have. You always want to give the viewer information on how to obtain a necessary player.

Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer deal with multimedia files in two different but somewhat similar ways. Netscape extends its capabilities with plug-ins. Netscape has a plug-ins folder where these programs are stored. You need to restart Netscape after installing a plug-in for the plug-in to work.
