Starting in Your Word Processing, Desktop Publishing, or Other Program

A Web page, when you think about it, is just a document. It's a document that happens to be saved in the HTML file format, but, other than that, it's not different from documents created in other document-producing programs, such as word processors (Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, for example), desktop publishing programs (Microsoft Publisher or Adobe PageMaker), and presentation programs (Microsoft PowerPoint).

If these programs could save the documents you create as HTML files, the programs would be fully functional Web authoring tools, right? Well, in most cases (unless you're still using versions from a few years ago), these programs can optionally save the files you create as HTML files.
