About External Media

Unlike such inline multimedia files as background sounds or inline GIF images, external media files are not displayed or played automatically when a visitor accesses a Web page. Instead, external files are downloaded to the visitor's PC and displayed or played there only when the visitor executes a particular link.

Think of it this way: If it's integrated into the layout of the page (or plays automatically, if it's a sound), it's inline; if the visitor has to do something to show or play it, it's external.
