About Animated GIFs

Animated GIFs are exactly what they sound like: GIF images that move. Unlike with other types of multimedia files discussed in this chapter, you can incorporate an animated GIF into the layout of a Web page and control the image's alignment, borders, and other formatting just like any other inline image [see Hour 14, “Adding Pictures (and Picture Backgrounds)”].

Unlike a regular GIF file, an animated GIF can move—well, a little. An animated GIF is not a suitable vehicle for a Disney film. Rather, animated GIFs provide very short, simple animations that add a little zip to a page without slowing its download to a crawl. A candle flickers. A cartoon bomb explodes. A horizontal line flashes and undulates. This kind of stuff is what animated GIFs do best.
