Answers for Day 18, “Advanced Techniques: Complex Query Systems”

1: What is the absolute value?
A1: The absolute value function returns the positive distance between a given value and zero. This can be used to determine how far off two values are from each other.
2: Why do we add the absolute values together?
A2: The combined absolute values are representative of the total amount of error in the query. The less total error, the better the match overall.
3: How can query items be weighted?
A3: You can weight certain elements of a query by changing the distance between the option values. For example, in the travel buddy query, the North routes were numbered sequentially, and then there was a big jump (numerically) before the South routes started.
4: What is a threshold?
A4: The threshold for a search is the maximum allowable amount of errors that a result item can have to be included in the search results. You can relate a threshold value to a percentage by calculating the total distance between all the responses and relating that number to 100% error.
5: Why is it important to enter the master search query right the first time?
A5: If you don't enter the search query right the first time, you might be unable to edit it later. This is a problem with UltraDev, not the query.
