Database Design

For there to be any sort of database-driven site at all, there must be a database backend that drives it. UltraDev does not supply this backend, nor does it pick one out for you. One of the first things that you'll need to do before you can start designing sites using the dynamic tools of UltraDev is to set up a database server, or at least set up a database, such as MS Access, on your computer. Don't worry—I'm going to give you step-by-step instructions on how to set up the MySQL database a little later. This database system is free on Unix, and shareware on NT—allowing it to be deployed as a backend system on just about any platform you prefer, including Mac OS X—and in many cases, it can be deployed entirely for free.

Before you can set up your database, you need to know something about database design. Creating a database is not as easy as saying, “Here are the fields I need—let's put them in a file and call it a database.” Instead, you need to find the most efficient way to store the data. This will enable you to easily work with information after it has been stored.
