Week: 3 At a Glance > Customizing the UltraDev Environment

Appendix B. Customizing the UltraDev Environment

In several places of the 21-day text, you've seen that you can edit the UltraDev configuration files manually to include your own preferences or alter existing defaults in the application. What makes UltraDev truly unique among modern complex applications is that almost all the files that UltraDev uses to configure its interface and behaviors are text-based. This means that with a bit of tinkering, you can change almost anything you want.

The best place to get started with modifying the UltraDev system is by reading the “Extending Dreamweaver” portion of the online help system. This will give you a good idea of what you can and cannot do. If you're impatient and just want to tinker, open up the configuration directory within your main UltraDev program directory and take a look around.

Tip

It is wise to make a copy of the configuration directory before you make any changes. If UltraDev fails to work properly, just replace the modified files with a copy of the original.
